Many people are struggling to make ends meet and the last thing they need is another fee from New York State. But that is exactly what the governor is forcing on motorists with his license plate cash grab – $25 for new license plates and an additional $20 to keep your current plate number.
Back in 2009, a similar stunt was attempted. I opposed the scheme then along with county clerks, other legislators, and thousands of my constituents. The public uprising forced the governor at the time to put the brakes on the ploy – now we must make our voices heard again.
I am urging the DMV to terminate this misguided plan and revoke any requirement forcing New Yorkers to pay for new license plates they simply don’t need.
