2020 Veterans Hall of Fame: Alfonso (Al) Piscitelli, 7th Senate District
Honoree Profile
Alfonso (Al) Piscitelli enlisted in the United States Army on November 8, 1954, and was transported to Fort Dix, New Jersey, where he spent eight weeks in
infantry training with the 69th Infantry Division. He was chosen as the Soldier of the Cycle in his barracks.
He was assigned to Wheel Vehicle Mechanic training to repair heavy vehicles and Jeeps, graduating first in his class with honors. He then went on to Fort Rucker, Alabama and assigned to the motor pool.
He returned to New York to marry the love of his life, Mary Ann, on February 12, 1956. She traveled with him to Fort Rucker in Ozark, Alabama until he was
separated from service in 1962 with the rank of SP3(T).
Mr. Piscitelli worked part time for the United States Post Office and part time as an automotive mechanic, and then began working for the New York State
Department of Motor Vehicles, Vehicle Safety Division. He was assigned to investigate consumer complaints dealing with auto repair shops and new and used car dealers. In 1982, he was assigned as Manager in Department of Motor Vehicles license and registration issuing office. In 1983, he was offered a position at the main office in Albany, then as Supervisor at the Vehicle Safety Division office in Jamaica until he retired in 2002.
He served the Carle Place American Legion as third Vice Commander and was voted Commander, still serving. As Commander, he entertained veterans from the Northport VA Nursing Home, and provided clothes donated by the community. He also maintains the grounds of the Carle Place Veterans Memorial Park.
He is a member of the North Hempstead Veterans Advisory Committee assuring veterans are made aware of their benefits and works closely with Northport VA Hospital.
He participates in awarding a $1,000.00 scholarship to a graduating senior and holding a Flag Day Ceremony every year with 6th grade students. He has also
worked with the American Legions Boys State Program since 1985.
Mr. Piscitelli and his wife recently celebrated their 64th Anniversary and are blessed with four children, nine grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
