Dominic Filippone
Honoree Profile
Dominic Filippone was born in Gioia Tauro, Italy. In 1956, he and his family were sponsored to emigrate to the United States by an aunt in New Jersey. At 8-years-old, he became a Rockland County resident, and eventually, a product of the Nyack School District. He obtained an associate degree at Rockland Community College and went on to attend Empire State College where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree.
Mr. Filippone was 21-years-old when he was drafted and began serving during the Vietnam era as an Army Special Forces soldier in 1969. After 13 months of service, he was promoted to Sergeant in the 10th Special Forces Group, Green Beret and was on an A Team for over two years.
While his tenure in the Army ended in 1971, he has since dedicated his life to serving veterans in his community. A legion member for 39 years, he has held many positions including: Vice Commander and Commander of James H. Anderson Post in Orangeburg, Vice Commander and Commander for the County American Legion and Commander of the Naurashank American Legion. During his time in the legion, he has coordinated a great send-off to the 101st Signal Battalion in Orangeburg, a welcome home party on their return from Afghanistan, and annual Christmas parties and 4th of July ice cream social events for the patients at the Rockland Psychiatric Center.
Currently, he is a volunteer at the PFC Joseph P. Dwyer Vet to Vet program, where he serves as a mentor and on the Advisory Board. Additionally, he serves as the Administrative Secretary at Veteran Angels, an organization dedicated to treatment and rehabilitation for military veterans and active service members with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Mr. Filippone has continued to be a strong advocate for victims and spread awareness on the disorder and spoke as an expert during Senator Carlucci’s PTSD Roundtable in January 2019.
