Ed Altenau
US Navy

Ed Altenau enlisted in the United States Navy in 1966, and attended boot camp in San Diego, California. He served as a communications specialist/ radioman in Brunswick Maine, Argentina, Newfoundland, and Roosevelt Roads in Puerto Rico. Mr. Alteneu, a Third Class Petty Officer was discharged with a Good Conduct Medal in 1972.

His service to our nation and his fellow veterans continued after his service in the Navy, as he remains a strong advocate for veterans from all eras. He is actively involved in the veterans’ community in Ulster County and is a past- Commander of American Legion Lamouree-Hacket Post 72 in Saugerties.

He currently serves as the Third Vice-Chair of the Ulster County American Legion, and as Chaplain for the Ulster County American Legion. Mr. Altenau is a member of the Kingston Veterans Association and an active participant in ceremonies and veteran recognition programs throughout the County.

Mr. Altenau has advocated on a local and state level to ensure veterans and their families receive support, services, and recognition helping to ensure a better quality of life for all of our nation’s heroes.

He serves on the Board of the High Woods Sportsman Club in Woodstock and is an usher at St. John’s Catholic Church in Centerville. For more than 30 years, Mr. Altenau was actively involved in youth sports in the community, as a Little League, Babe Ruth, and ice hockey coach.

Mr. Altenau speaks humbly of his own time in the service, while continuing to go above and beyond to recognize others, and provide much-needed support and friendship to his fellow veterans in Ulster County.
