Freddie R. Neilsen, Major USMC retired in 1985 as Mustang Major having
spent eight years enlisted time, serving in Administration, Airwing Support
Utilities, and Logistics Fields in the United States Marine Corp. From 1984
to 1986, he served in the Defense Logistics Agency, Alexandria, VA providing
high level logistics resolution for weapons system manufacturing and parts
requisition problems for all Military.
Concurrently, he established the Secretary of Defense – Homeless Support
Initiative – developed to provide Homeless Shelters in major United
States cities, aiding, in part, many homeless Veterans and with non-lethal
government excess material and personal health & hygiene items. During the
life of the Project, more than $1,000,000 in government excess material was
applied in direct support to men and women in the homeless shelter.
He was Command of Combat Service Support Detachment 31 from
3rd Marine Division’s, 3rd Force Service Support Group. Very rarely is a
company grade logistic officer given a Command. Commanding a deployed
unit of 86 Marines and Sailors was a remarkable experience.
He is a former Scout Master, Assistant Scout Master, Scout Mentor, Eagle
Project Advisor, and Chartering Organization Representative.
Mr. Neilsen is also continually active in veteran’s issues, including a member
of American Legion Post #336, Americanism Chairman, Commandant, Dan
Daly-Globe & Anchor Det. 225, Marine Corps League and founder of the
Harlem Hellfighters Advisory Committee.
He lives in Glen Cove and is the proud father of five children and grandfather
of nine.
Mr. Neilsen is a communicant of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church where is
has served as an usher, catechist, lector and business manager.
