Robert Squires was a major who served in the United States Marine Corps Infantry for more than 20 years. His service to our nation included two tours in
Vietnam.

During Mr. Squires first tour in Vietnam, he spent eight months in Phu Bai as a Platoon Commander with Lima Company 3rd Battalion 4th Marines. The
following 4 months, he continued commanding for India Company 3rd Battalion 7th Marines in Chu Lai. It was during this tour that he was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor for his brave actions against the enemy force during a night ambush. He also earned two Navy Commendation Medals.

On his second Vietnam tour, he was Company Commander of Kilo Company 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines at Da Nang. Here he was responsible for leading 200 men as well as 150 Army of the Republic Vietnam Rangers. During this tour, he fought a treacherous 10-hour battle, ultimately earning a Silver Star; the United States third highest award exclusively for combat valor. The South Vietnamese also awarded him with the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with a Gold Star.

And for his brave and heroic service during yet another night ambush, he was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds suffered during combat.

While in Vietnam, Mr. Squires was assigned as the liaison to the civilian government of Quang Nam Province. He also served with Bravo Company 1st Battalion 1st Marine Regiment. It was during this time that Major Squires was awarded his 3rd Navy Commendation Medal as Company Commander. In addition, he earned three Presidential Citations and a Combat Action Ribbon.

Besides being a great Marine, Mr. Squires is a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He and his late wife, Jane, had three sons together. Two of his sons went into the Marine Corps. Now that he is retired, he spends his time with his second wife, Shelley, visiting his 10 grandchildren, flying radio controlled airplanes, going to the shooting and archery ranges, gardening, and judging dog obedience trials around the country.

We thank Mr. Squires for his 20 years of military service and his lifelong devotion to our beautiful country, the United States of America.
