Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins is proud to announce her honoree for the 2021 Veterans Hall of Fame Induction, Colonel Thomas D. Butler, Jr.

Thomas D. Butler, Jr. served in the United States Army, the United States Army Reserve, and the United States Army Corps of Engineers. He retired at the rank of Colonel after 35 years of Service.

Despite having a prosperous career in the construction and planning business, Mr. Butler heard the call to serve his Nation and answered by enlisting in the United States Army. He proudly enlisted in the Army and served as a soldier for five years, and then for 30 years as an officer in the Army Corps of Engineers with the United States Army Reserve, where he was promoted to Colonel shortly before his retirement.

From a young age, Mr. Butler understood the importance of unity, understanding, and respect. Those values laid the foundation for Thomas Butler’s career, which includes becoming the first African American Mayor in the history of the Village of Tarrytown. Prior to his appointment as Mayor, Mr. Butler served on the Board of Trustees for 15 years.

Mr. Butler is very proud of his military service, and incorporated the values learned during that time in the military into his role as Trustee of Tarrytown, and now as Mayor of Tarrytown. Mr. Butler has been consistently involved in veterans affairs events, and has been an advocate for fellow veterans with regard to healthcare and funding.

Mr. Butler was born in Brooklyn and moved to Tarrytown, where he has lived for over 34 years. He married the love of his life, Cheryl, and they are the proud parents of four children, Kimberly, Blake, Ashley and Brent.

Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins is grateful to Colonel Butler’s decades of service to our country and is honored to present him as her inductee for the 2021 Veterans Hall of Fame.
