Somia Elrowmeim
Honoree Profile
Somia Elrowmeim is the founder of Women Empowerment Coalition of NYC. She is a Yemeni American organizer, educator and staunch advocate.
She served as the Adult Education and Women’s Empowerment Program Manager at the Arab American Association of New York; she joined the Association as a volunteer in 2011. Ms. Elrowmeim has dedicated herself to increasing opportunities for immigrant women. She is a dynamic leader, English language instructor, and activist. Her passion for community organizing, social justice, education, and women’s empowerment began as a student leader at Sana’a University in Yemen, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Mathematics.
Ms. Elrowmeim has led Brooklyn’s Arab American community in voter registration drives, town halls, small group meetings and protests, and rallies of local, national and international importance.
She is a powerful voice and outspoken leader who does not shy away from causes that she believes in. She was active in the Women’s March on Washington, protesting the Muslim travel ban and defending the rights of domestic violence survivors. She works to ensure that elected officials are held accountable and serve the best interests of their constituents.
In addition to her work as an advocate and educator with the Arab American Association, Ms. Elrowmeim serves as the Chair of the Board of Action Corps, which is actively fighting for humanitarian issues around the world.
She is also the founder of the Union of Arab Women, a member-led organization encouraging the civic engagement, economic empowerment, health, voter registration and education of New York’s Arab women.
Ms. Elrowmeim is the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions.
