Eugene DiGiacomo served in the United States Navy Seabees as a Second Class Petty Officer during the Vietnam War.

Mr. DiGiacomo went on detachment to Quang Tri and Qua Viet where he was involved in the process of purifying the water for the camps. In addition, he was placed in charge of security for the camp at Base Ben Keo in the Tay Nihn Province. In 1974, he was honorably discharged.

For his valor and service to his country, Mr. DiGiacomo earned numerous recognitions including the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Campaign, Vietnam Service 2 stars, Navy Unit Citation, Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross.

During his military experiences, he witnessed sacrifices by all those who served and has thus committed himself to teaching future generations about the Vietnam War. Mr. DiGiacomo is also a member of the NYS Veterans Affairs and Services Commission.

Mr. DiGiacomo serves as President of the Vietnam Veterans Chapter 421 in Staten Island, which flourishes in membership and strength in the community thanks to his dedicated efforts. Under his leadership, VVA Chapter 421 became the birthplace of Vietnam Veterans Day in New York State. Because of his advocacy, March 29 will forever recognize the American heroes of the Vietnam War. The Chapter has helped disadvantaged children through support and participation in the Superkids Program, revitalized the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park, and has established memorials at local high schools.

Throughout his distinguished service as President of VVA Chapter 421, Mr. DiGiacomo has consistently sought to honor all POW/MIAs and the 85 Staten Islanders who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam. He has helped to curate and preserve the memory of those who fell during the Vietnam War by sharing their stories, and ensuring that school-age children on Staten Island understand the sacrifices and hardships endured throughout their time at war.

In addition to his accomplishments, Mr. DiGiacomo established the Honor Guard, which was the first to offer paramilitary service at the funeral of any deceased veteran.
