Tom Carty
US Army National Guard

Tom Carty served as a Sergeant in the United States Army. After leaving active duty, he joined the New York Army National Guard.

A native of Columbus, Ohio, Mr. Carty joined the Army in 1990. He completed basic training, Infantry School, and Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia and was then assigned to the 3rd U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard), at Fort Myer, Virginia.

In addition to obtaining the rank of Sergeant, Mr. Carty completed Air Assault School, and earned the Expert Infantryman Badge. After serving a year in a line company, Mr. Carty was accepted to The Continental Color Guard (CCG). As a member of CCG, he carried our Nation’s colors in a variety of ceremonies, including the Inauguration of President Clinton, the funeral of President Nixon, and ceremonies commemorating the 50th anniversary of D-Day at Omaha Beach, and Victory in Europe (VE) Day in Moscow.

Mr. Carty attended Queens College and earned a Bachelor’s degree in History and a Master’s degree in Secondary Education. He began his career with the New York City Department of Education in 1999 as a Social Studies teacher at M.S. 172 in Floral Park. After earning a professional degree in School Administration from C.W. Post University, Mr. Carty served as an Assistant Principal at J.H.S. 162 in Bushwick, Brooklyn for nine years. Currently, he is in his eighth year as Principal of P.S./I.S. 49 in Middle Village, Queens.

Dedicated to his community, Mr. Carty is also involved in several neighborhood organizations. He is former board member and president of the Douglaston Club, and has spent over 10 years coaching basketball and soccer for the St. Anastasia Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) program. He is in his third year as the Chairman of the Little Neck Douglaston Memorial Day Parade Association.

Mr. Carty currently lives in Douglaston with his wife, Liz, and his daughters, Jacqueline, who is a freshman at the University of Dayton, and Elizabeth, who is a freshman at The Mary Louis Academy.
