Paul Albert Feddern began his service in the United States Army in 1967, serving in Vietnam. He attained the rank of Specialist 4th Class.
Mr. Feddern attended three semesters at Staten Island Community College before he volunteered for the draft in 1967. He attended basic training at Fort Jackson in North Carolina, advanced infantry training at Fort Gordon, Georgia, and parachute training at Fort Benning, Georgia.
Assigned to the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Mr. Feddern trained as a crew member on the 81 MM Mortar. In December 1967, he was deployed to Vietnam, traveling through various towns and cities before convoying up for a lengthy stay in Hue, S. Vietnam. He was stationed there during the brutal Tet Offensive in January 1968, the most savage battle in the War to date. Mr. Feddern’s end of tour was December 1968 when he was discharged from service.
Mr. Feddern, for his valor and service, earned numerous medals and awards including Combat Infantry Badge, Parachute Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Ribbon, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Sharpshooter Medal in Auto Rifle and 81mm mortar, and Expert Marksman in M79 Grenade launcher and .45 caliber pistol.
Mr. Feddern became involved in the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 32 Queens approximately 15 years ago, where he has held various positions and currently serves as Treasurer.
He was assigned to the 73rd Precinct in Brooklyn upon joining the New York City Police Department (NYPD), in October 1969. Mr. Feddern transferred to the 88th Precinct Detective Squad in 1987 before retiring as 3rd Grade Detective in October 1989.
Mr. Feddern, and his wife, Teresa, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in October. Together, they have three children and four grandchildren.
