Joseph M. Skinner, Sr.
US Marine Corps

Joseph M. Skinner, Sr. enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1966. He achieved the rank of Corporal and Platoon Sergeant, appointed by the Company Commander.

He survived the Major Tet Offensive that began on February 1, 1968, and participated in seven major Combat Operations.

For his military service, he has earned several recognitions and awards, including: Navy Achievement Medal with Combat “V," Presidential Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Silver Campaign Star, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citations and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Rifle Marksman Badge.

Following his Honorable Discharge in 1973, he went on to attend the College of Staten Island, graduating with an Associate degree in 1976. He continued his education at Baruch College, graduating in 1979, with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.

Mr. Skinner was the Assistant Treasury Manager for Daytop Village, through which he obtained his Certification for Addictive Specialties. He went on to work for NYCID, Boro Center, working with students in the WABC Program for six years. From there, he began a career with Camelot Drug/Substance Abuse Program as a Counselor/Recovery Coach for Veterans for seven years.

He is a member of Thomas J. Tori Chapter #421 Vietnam Veterans of America and Gold Star Post #1365 of the American Legion.

Throughout the years following his semi-retirement, he has been rewarded with the gratification of his continued contact with students and Veterans he has mentored, guided and/or influenced in their career paths. He is a proud recovering addict with over 25 years of sobriety.

Mr. Skinner is currently a volunteer mentor to veterans at the Staten Island Drug Court, working closely with the district attorney and judge.
