W. Gerard Asher

W. Gerard Asher was born in Mineola, New York. As a child, he experienced the “blackouts” that were conducted periodically during WW II. This, along with his father’s service in the United States Navy, cemented Mr. Asher’s firm belief that military service is a duty all citizens should be proud to fulfill. Mr. Asher graduated from Huntington High School in 1959, after starring in football, basketball, baseball, and serving as Senior Class President.

Mr. Asher joined the Army ROTC while at Princeton University. After graduation, he was commissioned in the Artillery. After completing Cornell Law School, Mr. Asher was assigned as a Low Altitude Missile Instructor and VIP briefer.

In 1968, he was sent to Korea, and within four days, the North Koreans captured the ship, Pueblo, holding 100 sailors in captivity. Mr. Asher was assigned to be Commander of “A” Battery 6th Battalion of the 44th Artillery. He was promoted to Captain on March 8, 1968. In recognition of his leadership during this time, he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for distinguished service.

Mr. Asher remained in the United States Army Reserve for several years, retiring as Captain. He received the Army Commendation Medal, Expeditionary Medal, and National Defense Medal. Mr. Asher is a lifetime member of VFW Post 1469 and American Legion Post 360, both in Huntington.

After military service, Mr. Asher returned to Huntington and opened a law office as a general practitioner, with an emphasis on real estate, surrogate work, and litigation. He also worked as a certified agent for MLB players with Tony Attanasio. He was a member of the Huntington Planning Board, the Youth Board, and president of several civic organizations. Mr. Asher received the Congressional Service Award for outstanding service to Long Island.

Mr. Asher served on the District Court Bench, where he was recognized as Judge of the Year in 2009, and served on the NYS Supreme Court. He is currently Chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals for the Town of Huntington and a mediator for New York State.

Mr. Asher married his high school sweetheart, Sylvia, in 1963. They have two beautiful grown daughters and one grandchild, and reside in Huntington.
