Nuala O’Doherty-Naranjo

Nuala O’Doherty-Naranjo is a first-generation American, a former prosecutor and notable community advocate in Queens.

A graduate of St. John's University School of Law, she moved to Jackson Heights with her husband, where she currently resides, and raised her five children. Ms. O’Doherty-Naranjo was active in local schools and was a member of the School Leadership Team at I.S. 230, I.S. 145, P.S. 149, P.S. 222, and Newcomers High School. She was elected President of the Parent-Teacher Association of P.S. 222 and I.S. 230.

Ms. O’Doherty-Naranjo’s leadership continued in her role as Vice President of the Community Education Council for District 30. For nearly two decades, she has been a dedicated community member, working with Jackson Heights Beautification Group, including her time as president of the organization from 2016 to 2019. From creating over 20 garden spaces, to bringing live music and events to Travers Park and Diversity Plaza, she has continued to contribute by enhancing the quality of life for her neighbors. Her history of advocacy and support for her community is reflected in her actions, including hosting educational forums on local issues and supporting area events like It’s My Park Day Cleanup.

Active in local government, Ms. O’Doherty-Naranjo was a member of Community Board 3 in 2017, and was involved in the fight for transportation alternatives in Jackson Heights. As a transportation advocate, she held leadership positions in the organization's Sensible Way to LGA, the Fix Northern Blvd. Campaign, and Queens Transportation Alternatives.

In 2020, Ms. O’Doherty-Naranjo founded the COVID Care Neighbor Network to keep people fed, as challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic affected the communities of Jackson Heights, East Elmhurst, and Woodside. Throughout the pandemic, she continued her advocacy as co-chair of the 34th Ave. Open Street Coalition to support more open spaces for Jackson Heights residents.

Ms. O’Doherty-Naranjo continues to be a staunch advocate and is a strong voice who works on behalf of her community.
