Janet Chan-Smith

Janet Chan-Smith is a loyal, strong-willed, compassionate woman who stands out from the crowd. She is involved with her community, and is someone who will undoubtedly leave her mark.

As current President of the Women’s Auxiliary of Woodhaven Unit 118, Ms. Chan-Smith leads a group of women volunteers in the community who, during the COVID-19 pandemic, teamed up with the Woodhaven Residents Block Association to give out free boxed food to those in need and assisted with other food drives run by the civic group.

Ms. Chan-Smith has spent 27 years working with the Woodhaven Residents Block Association as President, Vice-President, Building Manager, Director and Event Coordinator. She is approachable and available across the community and is known for her civic advocacy.

During voter registration drives, Ms. Chan-Smith assists Woodhaven residents who want to vote but do not know how to get started. She encourages both young and old to sign up to vote, explaining the voting process and mailing the registration forms to the Board of Elections for them. Ms. Chan-Smith has helped to organize a free book giveaway for adults and children that has become a favorite in the neighborhood.

One of Ms. Chan-Smith's passions is Saint Albans Military Hospital. She is proud to have led the community and her Unit 118 to make lap robes for the veterans during Christmas time. This tremendous task, on behalf of those who have served our Nation, brightened the smiles on the faces of many veterans.

Ms. Chan-Smith, steadfast in her efforts to make a difference, says this is only the beginning of her volunteerism. Her love for our country inspires her to encourage even more women in the community to become involved in the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 118.
