Dr. Carol Reneau, Ed.D.

Dr. Carol Reneau, Ed.D. served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. She achieved the rank of Lance Corporal.
Born in Belize, Dr. Reneau immigrated to New York in 1986. As a way to acclimate to American society and to be of service to her new home, she joined the Marine Corps Reserve. While enlisted, she served as a Service Record Book Clerk.
Dr. Reneau received numerous awards, including a Meritorious Unit Commendation, the National Defense Service Medal, and a Meritorious Mast. She was honorably discharged in 1994 when her military obligation ended.
Dr. Reneau’s love of education and teaching are pillars upon which she rests. She is a Special Education teacher and a literacy, education, and equity advocate. She graduated from Brooklyn College with a Master’s in Political Science, and later returned to Long Island University and earned a Special Education M.S.Ed. She completed her doctoral studies in education at Fordham University. Her research work focuses on children’s literacy, parent engagement, and school leadership.
She went on to launch a literacy program with the Belize National Library and Information Service at Vanderveer Park United Methodist Church called, “Reading Is Essential (RISE)” in 2009. This program is still ongoing in both places and has served thousands of youth. Most recently, Dr. Reneau founded a violin program at Vanderveer in 2019. This program serves at-risk youth in the community by teaching them to play the violin, while building leadership traits, such as confidence and resilience.
Her volunteer work includes: Big Brothers Big Sisters, Brooklyn District Attorney’s At-Risk Youth Program, the Benefit for Berkeley Carroll School, Co-President of the 300 E 25th St. Block Association, and serving as an appointed member of Community Board 17. She is a current Board Member of Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) of Brooklyn, and teaches History with the New York City Department of Education.
Dr. Reneau is proud to call Brooklyn home, and lives in Flatbush with her husband, Rick, and daughter, Zoe.
