In 1982, Ms. Satterley became a member of the Fire Department – the first female firefighter in Bellport. Currently, she is a 40-year member in the Hook and Ladder Company, and has served as Captain, Lieutenant and Secretary. In 2008, Ms. Satterley was elected the first female Fire Commissioner for the Bellport Fire District, proudly serving for 15 years. She has always served her community with passion, determination, and courage.
Ms. Satterley also worked for New York Telephone Company for 26 years. After retirement, she joined the Bellport Middle School as Cafeteria Manager. For seven years, Ms. Satterley ensured that the nutritional needs of the student population were met. No matter her job title, she always brought selfless dedication and pride – and always prioritized others’ needs.
Ms. Satterley is a lifelong resident of Long Island; she was born in Port Jefferson and grew up in East Patchogue, New York. In 1967, she married her husband, Charles. Together, they built a home and raised three children, Charles Jr., Kelly and Brian.
Ms. Satterley taught her children the core values of volunteerism and instilled in them the desire to help others, both in their professions and private lives. Charles Jr. has been a nurse for 30 years and has served with the Bellport Fire Department for 33 years. Kelly, also a nurse for 30 years, has served 10 years as a member of the Bellport Ambulance Company. Brian, a teacher, has served the Bellport Fire Department for 34 years.
Ms. Satterley is an example to others, as she is driven by the premise that volunteerism is morethan courage – it is about sacrificing yourself for something greater than yourself.
