Sonia Valentin
Honoree Profile
Sonia Valentin is a passionate community advocate and volunteer. She is a Southern Brooklyn resident who has stepped up countless times to support youth, seniors, families, veterans and others.
As President of New Utrecht Library Friends, Ms. Valentin knows the great value local libraries bring to our communities. She organizes educational and art programs, and supports the Library by advocating and raising funds so the Library can better serve the community’s needs.
For the past 13 years, Ms. Valentin has served on the NYPD’s 62nd Precinct Community Council, taking on the role of President in 2022. She strengthens the relationship between the NYPD and the greater community by supporting police programs with the NYPD Community Affairs department. She also organizes community events which include a Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon, National Night Out, “Love our Police” on Valentine's Day, and many more.
In addition to being an advocate for public safety, as 2nd Vice Chair of Brooklyn Community Board 11, Ms. Valentin works on all local matters. She assesses and voices neighborhood needs like affordable housing, schools, parks, hospitals, transportation, and quality of life. As a lifelong resident and active community volunteer, her seat at the table in these matters is priceless.
During the most difficult times, Ms. Valentin has always come to assist her fellow New Yorkers. After 9/11, she volunteered with Salvation Army, and worked as a midnight supervisor at Bouley Bakery to prepare meals for workers at Ground Zero. After Superstorm Sandy, she worked with local pastors to deliver food, clothes, and supplies to residents in hard-hit areas. She continues her valuable work with several other organizations like Neighborhood Advisory Board 11, Benson Avenue Block Association, St. Athanasius Church and Fort Hamilton Army Base.
A proud CUNY alumna, Ms. Valentin earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism with a Minor in Puerto Rican Studies.
Ms. Valentin is the proud mother of Victoria and Veronika who, inspired by their mother, have been community volunteers since age four. She is also a proud grandmother of Valentina and Alexander. She lives in Bensonhurst with her supportive husband, Frank.
