Kathy Dean served in the United States Army and achieved the rank of Sergeant.

Ms. Dean proudly served our Nation as an active-duty soldier serving two stints of Army service. A skilled military member, she trained at Ft. McClellan, Alabama, Charlies Company Cobras, Second Platoon, Training Battalion and Ft. Still, Oklahoma, C Battery, First Battalion 19th Field Artillery 1st Platoon Night Stalkers.

Ms. Dean’s first period of regular Army Active-Duty Service and Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) was as a 02J20 Clarinet Player from 1980 to 1986. She went on to Advance Individual Training at the School of Music, Naval Amphibious Base, in Little Creek, Virginia, where she was stationed for six months.

Her permanent duty stations were 1st Army Band in Ft. Meade, Maryland; the 8th Army Band in Seoul, Korea; and the 19th Army Band in Ft. Dix, New Jersey.

Ms. Dean’s second Regular Army Period was from 1999 to 2002. Her Military Occupational Speciality was as a 75H20 Personnel Sergeant (S1) at Ft. Huachuca, Arizona She was assigned to the 38th Personnel Service Battalion in Bamberg, Germany.

A Global War on Terrorism veteran (GWOT), Ms. Dean was mobilized at Ft. Huachuca, Arizona on a Post Quick Reaction Force the day the Twin Towers fell in New York City, when our Nation was attacked on the horrific day of September 11, 2001.

The Department of Defense sent out a THREATCON DELTA order, and soldiers were to separate barracks at Ft. Huachuca, sleeping in full uniform with field gear right beside their bunks. Working 12-hour shifts, the Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG) read the Rule of Engagement before every shift. The soldiers were then marched down to the Arms Room in order to be issued M-16s from the Supply Sergeant, who would also distribute four magazines of live ammunition.

In the aftermath of 9/11, Ms. Dean, along with many others, began to be mobilized to different parts of the military post they were assigned to. They were locked and loaded as they were under the threat of being bombed. Ms. Dean also assisted the Military Police with Post Check Points.

Even though she was in dangerous situations and uncertainty, Ms. Dean performed her duties with honor and vigilance.
