Charles A. Navarino
Honoree Profile
Charles A. Navarino was a Private First Class in the United States Army. In 1951,
Mr. Navarino was drafted into service during the Korean War.
For his service to our Nation, Mr. Navarino was awarded the National Defense
Medal. While stationed in Anchorage, Alaska, he was tasked with being a Jeep
driver for his Colonel. When his father succumbed to a heart attack, he was
honorably discharged from the Army.
Upon returning home, Mr. Navarino was employed as a truck driver for the
New York Daily News, the former New York Mirror, the Richmond County, and the
Hudson County News. Later, he took the position of bus driver for Pioneer Bus
Company.
Since his military days, Mr. Navarino has continued to stay active with the
American Legion and his community of veterans.
A proud member of the Granito-Smith American Legion Post 1296, Mr. Navarino
currently serves as Commander. He attends and coordinates Memorial and
Veterans Day services. He is a staunch supporter and an active participant in
committees formed through the Post.
Through Mr. Navarino’s efforts, he has laid the groundwork for how his children,
grandchildren, and great-grandchildren look back on their country and those who
have fought, and are currently fighting, for the country’s freedom. Mr. Navarino’s
hard work and dedication is noteworthy, as he works diligently to help families in
need during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.
Mr. Navarino was born and raised in New Brighton, Staten Island to Anthony
and Carmella Navarino. He married Angie Perno in 1955 and relocated to
Dongan Hills. They are the proud parents of three children: Anthony, Carolyn
(DiMartino), and Gina (Simas); five grandchildren: Joey, Charlie, Michael
(DiMartino), Kayla, and Troy (Simas); and four great-grandchildren: Aria,
Nicolette, Ayden, and Aubree.
