Samuel Ravelo answered the call to serve our Nation by joining the United States Navy. He attained the rank of 3rd Class Petty Officer. Mr. Ravelo’s valor shone during the Persian Gulf War, where he played an instrumental role in the liberation of Kuwait. His service in the military not only demonstrated his courage, but also solidified his dedication to safeguarding the principles of freedom and justice.
Upon the completion of his military tenure, Mr. Ravelo returned to the Bronx and enrolled at Bronx Community College, embarking on a path of academic enrichment. Subsequently, he joined the ranks of the New York City Police Department, a decision that marked the beginning of his enduring commitment to the safety and welfare of his fellow New Yorkers. With unwavering dedication, Mr. Ravelo climbed the ranks, attaining the esteemed position of Lieutenant after 26 years of exemplary service. His selflessness was starkly evident on the fateful day of September 11, 2001, when he rushed to offer aid during the tragic attacks on the World Trade Center, embodying the true spirit of a public servant.
Inspired by his own experiences and challenges, Mr. Ravelo stands as the visionary founder of a veterans' nonprofit organization. This organization serves as a vital resource to veterans and their families by offering critical assistance and muchneeded information.
Mr. Ravelo was born in the Dominican Republic into a working-class family. His father's small business and his mother's role as a pharmacist instilled in him a strong work ethic and a drive to overcome challenges. Faced with economic and political uncertainties in their homeland, Mr. Ravelo’s mother made the courageous decision to relocate their family to the United States, driven by the aspiration to provide her children with greater opportunities.
A devoted father, Mr. Ravelo raised his two sons, Sammy Jr. and Kevin, in the close-knit Morris Park neighborhood of the Bronx. His influence and dedication continue to shape not only his family, but also the broader community. His journey stands as a testament to the transformative power of resilience, service, and a boundless dedication to the betterment of others.
