Thomas Mooney was inducted into the United States Army on June 7, 1967 at the
age of 20. He was honorably discharged as a Specialist 4 on April 11, 1969.

Born on February 14, 1947, Mr. Mooney worked at the age of 17 as an oldfashioned
elevator operator for Willam A. White.

After returning from the service, Mr. Mooney went on to work at New York
Telephone in the Bronx, New York. While working full time, he attended night
school at Herbert H. Lehman, earning a degree in accounting. Mr. Mooney, diligent
in his studies, furthered his education by attending Farmingdale State College and
Stony Brook University. He became an auditor and engineer.

Mr. Mooney was an active member in Smithtown of American Legion Post 833, the
VFW Post 10870, and the Veterans of the Vietnam War.

He served as a Service Officer in both the American Legion and VFW helping
veterans with obtaining benefits and services from the VA. He assisted numerous
veterans and their families by connecting them with much-needed programs and
people that help with paying bills, getting food, or obtaining employment.

Mr. Mooney was the organizer of the VFW Voice of Democracy Essay Contest.
He administered the annual essay contest for students in grades 9 through 12, who
were enrolled in Smithtown High School East and West, as well as Hauppauge High
School. The contest allows students to express themselves by putting together a
democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. The winner of the contest has an
opportunity to win a scholarship of up to $35,000.

When he worked with the Veterans of the Vietnam War, he assisted veterans
through participating in programs such as the Beacon House and the Miliary
Support Package Project.
