Mary D'Antonio

Mary D’Antonio has been a resident of Hicksville and an active community leader for over 45 years.

In 1979, Ms. D’Antonio began her career as a temp in the Office of Academic Affairs at SUNY Old Westbury, working there for 38 years. While working full time, she took night classes, earning a B.A. in Psychology in 1994. She was elected President of the Alumni Association in 1996 and President of CSEA (Civil Service Employee Association) in 1998, holding both offices until her retirement.

Ms. D’Antonio knew she wanted to stay active in her community and take advantage of the many services and programs at the Hicksville Public Library. On her first visit, she found that it had not changed much since her youngest daughter visited the Library in the 1980s, and believed that it needed to be refurbished and modernized to better serve a diverse and growing population. Ms. D’Antonio sprang into action with a passion to give back to her community. In 2015, she successfully ran for the Library Board, and was re-elected in 2020.

Today, Ms. D’Antonio works tirelessly for the patrons of the Hicksville Library and the greater community. During her tenure on the Board, she has addressed many of the problems she first observed. The Hicksville Library now has a handicap-accessible doorway, a newly re-paved parking lot, and a renovated children's section. Under her leadership, the Library also installed security cameras, hired an additional security guard, and secured a 3D printer, which was utilized to make masks for healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ms. D’Antonio is currently Vice President of the Library Board and was Chair of the Library Strategic Planning Committee. There, she brought people together by encouraging employees from each department to attend the Strategic Planning meetings, stressing how important it was to give their input in order to effect greater change. Ms. D’Antonio continues her mission to make the Hicksville community and the Library a better place for all.

Additionally, Ms. D’Antonio has served as a member of the United Way Allocations Committee, Chair of the Statewide Labor Management Committee representing the State University of New York, President of the CSEA Local 618, a member of the Statewide Board of Directors of CSEA representing the State University of New York, a member of the Long Island Region State Employees Federated Appeal (SEFA), and Chair of the EAP Committee.

Ms. D’Antonio is also a proud mother of three children, Paul D’Antonio, Jeannine Roberts, and Christine D’Antonio, and grandmother of three amazing grandchildren, Alyssa D’Antonio, Jessica Roberts, and James Roberts. She was married for 47 years to the love of her life, Arthur.
