James A. Haynes III
Honoree Profile
James A. Haynes III enlisted in the United States Navy. He served with the Seabees and achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer.
Mr. Haynes served in Vietnam and has a long history of service to his Nation. He was in active service from 1971 to 1973 at ACB-2 Little Creek, Virginia, and continued serving in the Navy from 1973 to 1992, retiring as a Second Class Equipment Operator with Reserve Construction Battalions 13 and 21.
Following active duty, Mr. Haynes started working for the U.S. Coast Guard at the Activities NY Engineering Division Utility Shop as a boiler plant equipment mechanic, retiring after 33 years. He served as the Union President for AFGE Local 2747, New York.
Mr. Haynes has a history of volunteering within the Staten Island community. He is an honored member of the A.O.H. Division 4, serving as President for three years, and was Richmond County President of the A.O.H. In recognition of his services to the Irish community of New York, Mr. Haynes was honored with the Commodore John Barry Award in 2003. He was the 2005 Grand Marshal of the Richmond County Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, and received the Legion of Honor from the Chapel of the Four Chaplin's Museum.
He is an active member and officer of numerous organizations, including The United Staten Island Veterans Organization Inc. as Chief Executive Officer, Fleet Reserve Association Branch 226, and the Staten Island Catholic War Veterans Post 1934. He is also a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus member, and he served as Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Richmond Council 351. He is a member of Staff Sergeant Michael Olis VFW Post 9587 and Seabee Foundations. In 2017, Mr. Haynes was elected Commander of DAV Halloran Memorial Chapter #34, where he now serves.
Mr. Haynes is the Chairman of the Staten Island Memorial Day Parade and numerous fundraising events, including Evening of Honor. He travels annually to local cemeteries to change the flags of our veterans.
A native Staten Islander, Mr. Haynes was born in Tompkinsville to the late James A. II and Louella Haynes. He married his wife, Christine, and they have two sons, James IV and Christopher, along with three grandchildren, Philip, Lindsay, and Abigail.
Of all of his accomplishments, he is most proud of his family and their constant support and love.
