Bill Whetsel
Honoree Profile
Bill Whetsel served in the United States Air Force and achieved the rank of Airman First Class-E3.
A decorated veteran, Mr. Whetsel served our Nation as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) member. He then joined Trans World Airlines for a 13-year career.
In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, Mr. Whetsel was among the first 100 individuals hired to establish the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which led him to spearhead the transition of all United States airports from private security to federal security. He soon became the TSA security supervisor at Stewart Airport for eight years.
Soon after retiring, inspired by his family's service history and driven by his passion for serving and protecting others, he founded the Rumshock Veterans Foundation in 2019. The Rumshock Veterans Foundation, a groundbreaking initiative in the Highland Mills community, is a testament to Mr. Whetsel's commitment to his fellow veterans. The Foundation's comprehensive approach empowers veterans to enhance their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
From Rumshock Village (a residential community that provides affordable housing for veterans) to Hydroponic Farming (a program maintained by Village residents) and Victory Transportation (which helps Village residents travel to appointments with healthcare providers and other necessities), the Foundation's programs are a lifeline for veterans. E-Waste Recycling involves the recovery of materials for future production, and Canine Companionship offers emotional support to those in need, further demonstrating the Foundation's commitment to comprehensive support.
As the President of Rumshock Village, formerly known as Victory Village, Mr. Whetsel has faced numerous challenges over the past five years. However, his unwavering passion and determination, traits honed during his career as an Air Force veteran, have led to the creation of Victory Villages in Port Jervis.
Mr. Whetsel’s dedication to public service and his drive to create safe spaces for Orange County residents and veterans have not only inspired the entire Hudson Valley region, but also serve as a testament to his resilience and commitment.
