Gene Edwards served in the United States Navy and achieved the rank of E4, Petty Officer Third Class. 

As an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist, Mr. Edwards served with distinction in the Navy from 1989 to 1999 and performed three tours of duty in Iraq. 

Mr. Edwards was awarded for his bravery and valor and earned numerous awards, including the Good Conduct Medal and a Humanitarian Medal from the Governor of New York State for his work during Hurricane Sandy. 

A Bronx native and resident, Mr. Edwards attended New York City public schools and grew up in public housing. He enlisted in the Navy shortly after graduating from high school. 

He returned to the Bronx to serve his community and has worked for the Bronx District Attorney for the last nine years, fighting for justice for victims of crime. 

Among his dedications to his community, Mr. Edwards is a senior member of a youth literacy initiative known as "Ms. Ann's World." This organization gives out thousands of books for free to low-income children. 

He has worked closely with Neighborhood Benches to tackle food insecurities within his community, and has distributed thousands of pounds of much-needed food. 

Mr. Edwards is the Vice President of Neighborhood Advisory Board 4, and last year, he helped to secure $675,000 to fund programs in the NYCHA houses within his district. 

He is also known for his "Know Your Rights" forums within Concourse Village, which help to ensure that the public is aware of changes to the law and other important matters. 

Mr. Edwards has fought on behalf of our Nation, and he continues to fight on behalf of the people of the Bronx. He continues to be the voice of the residents in the 79th Assembly District as its District Leader, to which he was honorably elected in 2020. As District Leader, Mr. Edwards has employed over 250 people as poll workers with the Board of Elections. His latest endeavor is to curb urban gun violence, with the goal of providing useful resources to the youth to militate against crime.
