SUBJECT:    Asthma:  The causes, prevention efforts and best practices

PURPOSE:    To discuss how we can reduce the incidence of asthma by addressing environmental causes and pursue best practices to help reduce the severity of symptoms, particularly in areas of the state hardest hit.

Senator Todd Kaminsky, Chair of the Standing Committee on Environmental Conservation and Senator Gustavo Rivera, Chair of the Standing Committee on Health will be holding a Roundtable discussion at 10:00 am on Thursday, November 14, 2019 at Union Community Health Center, 260 East 188th Street, Bronx, New York to discuss and examine issues relating to Asthma.

Asthma is a chronic disease of the lungs that causes wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing.  When not well-controlled asthma can greatly limit a person's quality of life and even result in death.  In 2015, an estimated 1.5 million adults and over 400,000 children had Asthma in New York. There is no cure for asthma however; it can be controlled with proper medication and self-management.  Similarly, reducing environmental factors can mitigate the symptoms.

Disparities in the rate of asthma persist among racial and ethnic groups, and residents of the Bronx are suffering from asthma at far higher rates than other areas of the state.  This Roundtable will bring together stakeholders and experts in the field to explore how we can reduce the incidences of asthma and pursue best practices to help managed the symptoms for those who are suffering.
