LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory upon the
opening of the Hillside Laboratories, which is an environmentally
friendly complex that will house cutting-edge scientific research on
cancer, neurodevelopmental and neurological disorders, and other serious
causes of human suffering
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the efforts
of those organizations which seek to bring recognition to science and
education within the State of New York, and in doing so, help to ensure
that the complete health of our State and Nation is preserved; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory on its historic leadership in biomedical
research and education and upon the special occasion of the opening of
the Hillside Laboratories on Friday, June 12, 2009; and
WHEREAS, The New York State "Gen*NY*sis" initiative provided $20
million toward the Hillside Laboratory project in 2002; and
WHEREAS, The construction of the Hillside Laboratories was the largest
project ever undertaken by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and will
increase research space by 40 percent; and
WHEREAS, It is estimated that the project of building the Hillside
Laboratories provided as many as 250 construction industry jobs on Long
Island, and that approximately 200 new high-tech jobs will be created
once the Hillside Laboratories are fully occupied; and
WHEREAS, The Hillside Laboratories will usher Cold Spring Harbor Labo-
ratory into a new era of scientific research that will include increased
emphasis on translational research and add the Center for Quantitative
Biology to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory's existing research programs;
and
WHEREAS, The six new laboratories include: The Donald E. Axinn Labora-
tory, built to support researchers studying the neurobiological roots of
mental illness; The Nancy and Frederick DeMatteis Laboratory, where
scientists will try to understand the fundamental building blocks of
human genetics and apply that understanding to the treatment of genetic
diseases that include cancer, autism, and schizophrenia; The David H.
Koch Laboratory, home to a newly established Center for Quantitative
Biology, where an interdisciplinary team of top mathematicians, physi-
cists, and computer scientists will develop computational models with
which to interpret and understand complex data sets generated by exper-
iments in all CSHL laboratories; The William L. and Marjorie A. Mathe-
son Laboratory, dedicated to searching for improved methods of cancer
diagnosis and therapy; The Leslie and Jean Quick Laboratory, designed
for researchers striving to understand the genetics of cancer; and The
Wendt Family Laboratory, designed to allow for the expansion of research
on neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases; and
WHEREAS, The Hillside Laboratories are designed to be 30 percent more
efficient than standards for similar structures set by the American
Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers Stand-
ards; and
WHEREAS, The Hillside Laboratories have an innovative environmental
design for storm-water management that uses newly created wetlands, rain
gardens and bio-swales to filter storm-water runoff from the complex
before it ultimately makes its way into the Cold Spring Harbor; and
WHEREAS, Nearly 700 trees have been planted to reforest the approxi-
mately 11 acres of forest that were cleared to make way for the
construction; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to have this opportunity to
