LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration
Corporation upon the occasion of its designation for special recognition

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor the
Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation upon the occasion of its
designation for special recognition on Thursday, June 18, 2009; and
WHEREAS, This event is a special annual benefit in support of the work
of Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation; and
WHEREAS, Since its inception in 1967, Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration
Corporation has been striving to make Bedford Stuyvesant a better place
for residents and businesses alike; and
WHEREAS, Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation provides a full
spectrum of programs that promote self-sufficiency and inspire family
and youth to succeed in work, at school, and at home; from increasing
access to jobs that pay living wages to preserving the rich cultural
legacy that Bedford Stuyvesant prides itself on, Restoration is a cata-
lyst for tangible change in Central Brooklyn; and
WHEREAS, On a broader level, as the nation's oldest community develop-
ment corporation, Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation is a
pioneer in its field, facilitating neighborhood improvement while serv-
ing as a model for distressed communities nationwide; and
WHEREAS, Long viewed as a pillar in the community, the redesign of
Restoration Plaza cements Restoration's position in the hearts of the
residents of Bedford Stuyvesant as a commercial and cultural hub; the
ambitious project promises to enhance both the Plaza's utility and phys-
ical appeal and has since attracted numerous new businesses, including
the first family restaurant in the community in over 30 years; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Restoration Plaza offers a myriad of job train-
ing and placement opportunities, workshops that promote financial liter-
acy and entrepreneurship, and programs that raise the bar of artistic
excellence while preserving Bedford Stuyvesant's rich cultural legacy;
as a result, thousands of people pass through its doors every day; and
WHEREAS, Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation's distinguished
record merits the recognition and respectful tribute of this Legislative
Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation upon the occasion
of its designation for special recognition; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation.
