LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Kingston High School student-ath-
lete Matt Petro upon his selection as the Varsity845 Player of the Year

WHEREAS, Excellence and success in competitive sports can be achieved
only through strenuous practice, team play and team spirit, nurtured by
dedicated coaching and strategic planning; and
WHEREAS, Athletic competition enhances the moral and physical develop-
ment of the young people of this State, preparing them for the future by
instilling in them the value of teamwork, encouraging a standard of
healthy living, imparting a desire for success and developing a sense of
fair play and competition; and
WHEREAS, Pitching on three days rest after a complete game, Kingston
senior baseball star Matt Petro threw another complete game and beat
Warwick 9-3 for the Section 9 Class AA varsity baseball title; his
season ended with the sectional final at SUNY New Paltz; and
WHEREAS, Matt Petro's final numbers were astonishing, including a 9-0
record with a 1.15 ERA; he allowed just 42 hits in 61 innings and struck
out 56; in addition, he held opposing hitters to just a .189 batting
average; and
WHEREAS, The athletic talent displayed by Matt Petro is due in great
part to the efforts of Coach Mike Groppuso, a skilled and inspirational
tutor, respected for his ability to develop potential into excellence;
and
WHEREAS, Matt Petro's overall record is outstanding; he was loyally
and enthusiastically supported by family, fans, friends and the communi-
ty at large; and
WHEREAS, Coach Mike Groppuso has done a superb job in guiding, molding
and inspiring Matt Petro toward his goals; and
WHEREAS, With Matt Petro throughout have been his parents, Tom and
Kim, both of whom feel privileged to be a part of his life and rejoice
in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Sports competition instills the values of teamwork, pride and
accomplishment, and Coach Mike Groppuso and Matt Petro have clearly made
a contribution to the spirit of excellence which is a tradition of their
school; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate student-athlete Matt Petro on his selection as the
Varsity845 Player of the Year; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Matt Petro.
