LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Amy Sumner for her community service and
advocacy on behalf of School-Based Health Centers in Brooklyn, New York

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who distin-
guish themselves in service to their community merit the highest commen-
dation; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor
Amy Sumner upon the occasion of her being honored by her colleagues for
her advocacy and support of School-Based Health Centers, in conjunction
with the 2010 Advocacy and Education Day of the Statewide Coalition for
School-Based Health Centers on February 9, 2010, in Albany, New York;
and
WHEREAS, School-Based Health Centers improve access to quality health
and mental health care for underserved children and adolescents; and
WHEREAS, Such centers fill a critical need for children's health care
by providing primary, preventive and mental health services to children
who may otherwise go without care; and
WHEREAS, Amy Sumner's advocacy brought to the attention of elected
officials that four centers would close if additional state resources
were not available, depriving the children in Brooklyn of these critical
health and mental health services; the centers operate in the Brooklyn
School for Collaborative Studies/Brooklyn New School, Middle School 51,
Public School 38, and the Brooklyn School for Global
Studies/International Studies; and
WHEREAS, Amy Sumner's leadership and advocacy was crucial in enlight-
ening state leaders so that thousands of children in Brooklyn will
continue to have access to these vital services; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Amy Sumner upon the occasion of her being honored by the Coalition
for School-Based Health Centers for her community leadership; and be it
further
