LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION endorsing the application to bring a space shut-
tle to the State of New York for permanent display for the benefit of
the public

WHEREAS, The NASA space shuttle program has been in operation since
1981; and
WHEREAS, The space shuttle program represents the most successful
continued space program in the history of space exploration; and
WHEREAS, The successes of the space shuttle program have benefited our
Nation and its interests and our entire world in advancing scientific
discovery; and
WHEREAS, The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has
announced that the fleet of space shuttle orbiters will be permanently
retired within the next one to two years; and
WHEREAS, Institutions around the United States who are interested in
permanently displaying a space shuttle to the public have been invited
to submit applications to NASA; and
WHEREAS, The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York has
submitted such an application in pursuit of bringing a space shuttle to
this great Empire State and permanently displaying it for the benefit of
the general public; and
WHEREAS, The State of New York is an ideal location to display a shut-
tle for the benefit of the general public due to the significant size of
the local population, the tens of millions of tourists who visit every
year, and the high concentration of educational and cultural insti-
tutions that would benefit from the exposition of a shuttle in New York,
as well as numerous other reasons; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
hereby endorse the application to bring a space shuttle to the State of
New York for permanent display, and to encourage all New Yorkers to
support this effort; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York, and The
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
