LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor David A. Paterson to
proclaim May 2010, as Be Kind to Animals Awareness Month in the State of
New York

WHEREAS, The State of New York takes great pride in participating in
months of awareness of important issues; and
WHEREAS, Be Kind to Animals Awareness Month commemorates the positive
role animals play in our lives, promotes ways to continue to treat them
humanely, and encourages others to do the same; animal cruelty and the
protection of animal species are of great public concern; and
WHEREAS, Animal abuse and neglect result in unnecessary pain and
suffering to animals; it is imperative to encourage empathy and
compassion for animals; and
WHEREAS, There are numerous ways to be kind to animals each and every
day, such as: speak out for animals by getting informed about policies
and legislation that can impact the animals in your community and
throughout the country; report animal abuse for the essential reason
that animal cruelty and abuse is not only tragic for animals, but also a
strong indication that other forms of abuse such as domestic violence
could be happening; appreciate animals because they all deserve to be
treated humanely; adopt a pet from a shelter or rescue and help these
animals find a second chance at happiness; and take good care of your
pet because animals are like children who never grow up; they need you
to help keep them healthy and safe throughout their lives; and
WHEREAS, To be a responsible pet owner, one must keep their animal's
vaccinations up-to-date, make sure the animal is wearing proper iden-
tification, and schedule annual appointments with the veterinarian; and
WHEREAS, Encouraging kindness to animals will promote the humane
treatment and protection of animals, respect for the important role of
animals in nature, and the need to control the overpopulation of animals
which results in animals being abandoned and caused to suffer; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body recognizes the importance of and
supports and encourages the observance of Be Kind to Animals Awareness
Month in the State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor David A. Paterson to proclaim May 2010, as Be Kind
to Animals Awareness Month in the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable David A. Paterson, Governor of the State of New
York.
