National Library Week; this year's theme is "Communities thrive @ your
library"; and

able contributions made by all library workers; and
WHEREAS, Libraries are a vital part of a sound education and a treas-
ured part of American culture and are deserving of public support; and
WHEREAS, Literate, informed citizens are essential to the productivity
of our Nation and the survival of our democratic institutions; and
WHEREAS, The annual celebration of Library Week draws attention to a
vital public institution, emphasizing the essential role libraries,
librarians, and library workers play in promoting access to information
for all; and
WHEREAS, Library usage has soared as people flock to their local
libraries to look and to apply for employment, receive assistance on
resume writing and interview skills, and research new careers and busi-
ness opportunities; and
WHEREAS, Today, many families that are on a tight budget are also
visiting libraries more than ever as they seek to save money by using
the books, music, video and cultural programming available at their
local libraries; and
WHEREAS, Awareness and support must be increased for libraries,
librarians and library workers by raising their visibility in a positive
context, by communicating clearly and strongly why libraries are both
unique and valuable, and how librarians and libraries provide the infor-

fitting that we recognize the invaluable service provided to the people
of the State of New York by our libraries, whether local, state, or
