LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 65th Anniversary of Victory in
Europe Day

WHEREAS, The suffering and sacrifices of members of the United States
Armed Forces, who served so faithfully and courageously in World War II,
must be remembered with reverence so future generations will never
forget the cost of the peace they made possible; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 65th Anniversary of Victory in Europe (V-E) Day, to be cele-
brated on Saturday, May 8, 2010; and
WHEREAS, May 8, 1945, the date when the Allied Forces formally
accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Nazi Germa-
ny, marked the end of the Third Reich; the citizens of Europe were
liberated, as were the survivors of Hitler's concentration camps and the
Allied prisoners of war; and
WHEREAS, With victory in the Pacific just over the horizon, cele-
brations broke out all over the world; V-E Day, May 8 remains a time
when people across the globe pay tribute to those who so courageously
fought for the freedom we enjoy today; and
WHEREAS, In acknowledgement of the supreme sacrifice of the fallen
forces on May 8, 2010, many will mourn those losses, others will cele-
brate with fireworks; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body, acting on behalf of
this Empire State, to honor the members of the United States Armed
Services who served so valiantly, and with such distinction, to liberate
Europe from the tyranny of the Third Reich, and specifically to honor
the more than 100,000 veterans of World War II yet living in New York,
who remind us by their example why they were the "Greatest Generation";
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 65th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Intrepid Air-Sea-Space Museum in New York City, the New
York State Military Museum in Saratoga Springs, the United States
Merchant Marine Academy, and the United States Military Academy at West
Point.
