LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor David A. Paterson to
proclaim May 2010 as Beef Month in the State of New York

WHEREAS, Emerging research continues to suggest that high-quality prote-
in plays an increasingly important role in weight management, muscle
development and maintenance, and disease prevention, including the
prevention of sarcopenia and diabetes; and
WHEREAS, With the obesity epidemic becoming an ever increasing crisis,
and the continued aging of the "baby boomer" generation, the benefits of
high-quality protein have never been more critical; and
WHEREAS, Scientific evidence suggests that moderately increasing the
proportion of protein in the diet may improve body composition, facili-
tate weight loss and improve weight maintenance following weight loss;
and
WHEREAS, In its report on the role of beef in the American diet, the
American Council on Science and Health concludes that lean beef in
moderate servings fits well in a heart-healthy diet; its inclusion in
the diet can help individuals meet their nutrient needs, as well as
provide additional variety and flexibility to their diet, which can
improve long-term adherence; and
WHEREAS, Due to a combination of production practices and trimming,
consumers have more lean beef choices than ever before; and
WHEREAS, There are 6,800 beef operations in New York; the number of
beef cows has steadily increased since 2002 and there are now 104,000
head of beef cattle in the Empire State; and
WHEREAS, New York's beef industry contributes over 40 million dollars
to the economy; and
WHEREAS, It is most appropriate that May 2010 be recognized as Beef
Month in the State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor David A. Paterson to proclaim May 2010 as Beef
Month in the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable David A. Paterson, Governor of the State of New
York.
