LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor David A. Paterson to
proclaim May 10, 2010 as Your Story Matters Day in the State of New York

WHEREAS, Though addiction is a chronic brain disease impacting 2.5
million New Yorkers and their families, there are tens of thousands of
New Yorkers and their loved ones who are living stories of recovery from
alcoholism, drug abuse and problem gambling; and
WHEREAS, New Yorkers need to know there is hope and help for breaking
the cycle of addiction; and
WHEREAS, Sponsored by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and
Substance Abuse Services (OASAS), the second annual Your Story Matters
Day celebrates and is dedicated to the individuals who are leading
productive, healthy and fulfilling lives in recovery; and
WHEREAS, Recovery from the chronic disease of addiction is not merely
abstinence, it includes a lifestyle of health and wellness which
supports a productive life in the community as well; and
WHEREAS, Through Your Story Matters Day and its website
WWW.IAMRECOVERY.COM OASAS offers individuals in recovery and their loved
ones the opportunity to tell their stories; and
WHEREAS, Your Story Matters Day is a time for individuals in recovery
who have struggled and worked hard to continue their journey of recovery
and to celebrate their revitalization by proudly telling the story of
who they are today and, thereby, possibly helping others since one
person's story is another person's hope; and
WHEREAS, These potent stories of the power and possibility of recovery
help reduce the stigma so wrongly associated with addiction and offer
hope to individuals who are dealing with alcohol, drug or gambling
addiction; and
WHEREAS, Your Story Matters Day also symbolizes the significance of
stories shared in reducing stigma and raising awareness that prevention
is proven, treatment works, and recovery is real; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to encourage those
in recovery to join this growing community and help show the world that
recovery from addiction is possible; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor David A. Paterson to proclaim Monday, May 10, 2010
as Your Story Matters Day in the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable David A. Paterson, Governor of the State of New
York.
