LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Scenic Hudson upon the occasion of its
designation as a recipient of the Special Recognition Award by the Mill
Street Loft

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions which devote themselves to the welfare of the community and its
citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Scenic Hudson upon the occasion of its designation as a recipient of the
Special Recognition Award by the Mill Street Loft, to be celebrated on
Thursday, March 5, 2009; and
WHEREAS, Scenic Hudson works to protect the majestic landscapes along
the Hudson River as an irreplaceable national treasure and a vital
resource for residents and visitors; it is the largest land-preservation
group focused on the Hudson Valley; and
WHEREAS, Building on its 40-year track record of saving land, Scenic
Hudson in 2007 launched its campaign to Save the Land That Matters Most
to provide a lasting commemoration of the 2009 Quadricentennial of Henry
Hudson's voyage of discovery; the initiative is a collaborative effort
with fellow land trusts, governments, individuals and businesses to
protect 65,000 acres of great scenic, ecological and agricultural
significance; and
WHEREAS, Scenic Hudson has continued to celebrate the artistic inspi-
ration of the land through art and photography competitions that have
engaged thousands throughout the valley; and
WHEREAS, Among the many ways Scenic Hudson's work supports the arts,
its efforts in the City of Beacon are a prime example; Scenic Hudson has
been investing in the city's waterfront since the early 1990s; and
WHEREAS, Recognizing in Beacon a unique combination of location,
scenic beauty and strong community leadership, the group, with support
from the New York State Council on the Arts, created a plan for revital-
izing the waterfront; and
WHEREAS, Scenic Hudson has continued to lay the groundwork for the
city's long-term prosperity through its creation of a new waterfront
park - Beacon Point Park - which incorporates an installation by world-
class artist George Trakas; Scenic Hudson views land preservation and
the arts as essential to the vitality of the Hudson Valley; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to society, Scenic Hudson's distinguished record
merits the recognition and respectful tribute of this Legislative Body;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Scenic Hudson upon the occasion of its designation as a recipi-
ent of the Special Recognition Award by the Mill Street Loft; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Scenic Hudson.
