LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Mr. John Samuelsen upon the occasion of
his designation as the Irishman of the Year by the Emerald Society-New
York City Transit Authority

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those individuals whose professional and civic endeavors
have enhanced the quality of their community in the great State of New
York; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Mr. John
Samuelsen upon the occasion of his designation as the Irishman of the
Year by the Emerald Society-New York City Transit Authority, to be cele-
brated at its 48th Anniversary Dinner Dance on Saturday, September 18,
2010; and
WHEREAS, In December of 2009, John Samuelsen was elected president of
TWU Local 100, the union that represents 38,000 subway and bus workers
in the New York City region; he assumed the leadership at a troubled
time for the transit system; and
WHEREAS, John Samuelsen has perhaps been most visible on the national
scene, joining social justice and environmental advocates to push for
increased federal funding for transit service; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to society, John Samuelsen is a man who truly
embodies the spirit of the Irish, and deserves to have his name added to
the distinguished list of "Irishman of the Year"; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which John Samuelsen has displayed
throughout the entire period of his constructive service; he has stood
constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when an indi-
vidual of such noble aims and accomplishments is brought to our atten-
tion, he should be recognized by all the citizens of this great Empire
State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Mr. John Samuelsen upon the occasion of his designation as the
Irishman of the Year by the Emerald Society-New York City Transit
Authority; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Mr. John Samuelsen, President, TWU Local 100.
