LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring New York City Deputy Mayor Ed Skyler for
his consummate courage and bravery while confronting a mugger in midtown
Manhattan

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize the
caring concern and heroic acts of those exemplary citizens who take
prompt and appropriate action in emergency situations; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor New
York City Deputy Mayor Ed Skyler for his consummate courage and bravery
while confronting a mugger in midtown Manhattan; and
WHEREAS, On March 3, 2009, New York City Deputy Mayor Ed Skyler was on
his way to meet a friend for dinner near West 48th Street and Sixth
Avenue when he saw a gang of teens running away from a woman yelling for
help; and
WHEREAS, Acting quickly, New York City Deputy Mayor Ed Skyler headed
for the group, catching one of the teens who had slipped on the ice
trying to avoid him and pinning him to the street; and
WHEREAS, Following a brief skirmish, the suspect ran off after drop-
ping the woman's BlackBerry, which New York City Deputy Mayor Ed Skyler
promptly returned to the woman; and
WHEREAS, Through his spontaneous and heroic actions, New York City
Deputy Mayor Ed Skyler demonstrated his character and compassion for the
welfare of others, personifying, by virtue of his actions, the collec-
tive concern of ordinary citizens across the community of the State of
New York who voluntarily respond when others are in need of help; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to have this opportunity to
express its highest admiration for New York City Deputy Mayor Ed Skyler
and to wish him continued success in all of his future endeavors; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor New York City Deputy Mayor Ed Skyler for his consummate courage
and bravery while confronting a mugger in midtown Manhattan; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to New York City Deputy Mayor Ed Skyler.
