LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor David A. Paterson to
proclaim April 2009, as Brain Tumor Awareness Month in the State of New
York

WHEREAS, The State of New York takes great pride in participating in
months of awareness of important health issues; and
WHEREAS, The Messa Mustangs and the Union College Women's Ice Hockey
Team are hosting a "Stick it to Brain Tumors" Women's Ice Hockey Tourna-
ment April 3-5, 2009, to raise awareness of brain tumors; all proceeds
will benefit the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation for pediatric brain
tumor research; and
WHEREAS, Each year, more than 200,000 people in the United States are
diagnosed with a primary or metastatic brain tumor; and
WHEREAS, Brain tumors are the leading cause of solid tumor cancer
deaths in children under the age of 20, the second leading cause of
cancer deaths in male adults between the ages of 20 and 29, and the
fifth leading cause of cancer death in female adults between the ages of
20 and 39; and
WHEREAS, The cure rate for most brain tumors is significantly lower
than that of many other cancers, and in many cases, survivors live with
physical and/or psychological disabilities; and
WHEREAS, Brain tumors have no socio-economic boundaries and do not
discriminate among gender or ethnicity; and
WHEREAS, There are currently no known causes of brain tumors; complete
and accurate data on all primary brain tumors is needed to provide the
foundation for investigations of its cause and research leading to
improved diagnosis and treatment; and
WHEREAS, It is important to raise funds and awareness of this horrific
disease; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor David A. Paterson to proclaim April 2009, Brain
Tumor Awareness Month in the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable David A. Paterson, Governor of the State of New
York.
