LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Seamus (Jim) Wrynn upon the occasion of
his designation for special recognition by the Brehon Law Society

WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those exceptional citizens who are committed to the high-
est ideals of society; Seamus (Jim) Wrynn, an outstanding Irish Ameri-
can, is, indeed, one of those citizens; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Seamus (Jim) Wrynn upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition by the Brehon Law Society at a party to be held on Wednes-
day, March 10, 2010, at the Manhattan Club in New York City; and
WHEREAS, The Brehon Law Society takes its name from the body of
ancient Celtic law that defined and governed legal relationships in
Ireland; and
WHEREAS, From earliest times, Brehon Law was distinguished by its
egalitarianism and its respect for fundamental rights and liberties; and
WHEREAS, Inspired by the strongly humanitarian tradition embodied in
Brehon Law, the members of the Brehon Law Society strive to use their
talents to protect, to defend, and to extend human rights, principally -
but not exclusively - in the north of Ireland; and
WHEREAS, Seamus (Jim) Wrynn was born in a small rural town in the West
of Ireland in the Ballinamore, County Leitrim; and
WHEREAS, A fiercely committed student, Seamus attended school close to
his home and received a solid education from the Sisters of Mercy who
taught there; and
WHEREAS, In addition to paying close attention to his studies, Seamus
was also a passionate Gaelic footballer and a proud member of the Balli-
namore "Sean O'Heslins," one of the top Gaelic football clubs in the
county; and
WHEREAS, Many of his closest, lasting friendships were cast on the
football field as were many of his fondest memories; and
WHEREAS, Seamus and his family have been affected by the troubles that
have plagued Ireland; he lost both his mother, Mary Kate, when he was
only 12 years of age, as well as his uncle and namesake who was killed
in an ambush at the age of 21; and
WHEREAS, This incident sparked his early interest in politics, a
passion that has stayed with him throughout the years; and
WHEREAS, This passion was evidenced when, as a boy, he canvassed for
votes for the local politician and later, as a grown man, joined the
local political club almost immediately upon landing on America's
shores; and
WHEREAS, Seamus has been a proud member of that club for over 45
years, taking nothing for granted and knowing the value of a strong
democratic society; and
WHEREAS, Drawing on his occupation as a bartender in Dublin where he
met his wife, Nell, when they emigrated to New York, Seamus found work
as a bartender and honed his skills in local Irish dining establish-
ments, eventually owning and operating several popular Irish "pub style"
restaurants; and
WHEREAS, In keeping with his Irish heritage, his delightful personal-
ity, and his "gift of the gab," Seamus eventually decided to go into
sales, working for Peerless Importers, Charmer Industries and Star
Industries until his retirement in 2008; and
WHEREAS, Even in retirement, Seamus remains active in local politics,
his beloved St. Kevin's Church, and in many other community activities
and events; and

WHEREAS, As a beloved father and grandfather, he and his loving wife,
Nell enjoy spending time with their six children, James, Gerard, Sean,
Kieran, Colm and Mary, and their 14 grandchildren, all of whom feel
privileged to be a part of their lives, and rejoice in their achieve-
ments; and
WHEREAS, Seamus embodies the principles of the Brehon Law Society
through his dedication to democracy, equality and justice for all
people; and
WHEREAS, Seamus (Jim) Wrynn is always ready with an open door, a hug
and a kiss, and a vast library of opinions and solutions waiting to be
shared; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Seamus (Jim) Wrynn upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition by the Brehon Law Society, and to pay tribute to
this outstanding Irish American whose concern for others is apparent in
all his endeavors; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
