LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION paying tribute to the life and legacy of Dominic
A. Murray, dedicated student, superb athlete, and compassionate young
man

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is deeply moved to inscribe upon its
records this remembrance for Dominic A. Murray, a young man of incredi-
ble perseverance whose fortitude and optimism were greater than any
personal hardship he ever faced; and
WHEREAS, Dominic A. Murray died at the age of 17, after collapsing on
the basketball court at SUNY Farmingdale State College, during an open
gym pick up game, only a few weeks after receiving medical clearance to
participate in college sports; and
WHEREAS, A talented athlete, Dominic A. Murray had suffered Sudden
Cardiac Arrest resulting from cardiac hypertrophy related to underlying
heart problems; and
WHEREAS, Clutching the torch he passed on to her, Dominic A. Murray's
mother, Melinda Murray, has vowed to finish the course traveled by her
only child; she has charged forward to keep Dominic's legacy alive and
has founded the Dominic A. Murray 21 Memorial Foundation, Inc. which
will be officially launched on Friday, June 4, 2010, at Farmingdale
State College, Farmingdale, New York; and
WHEREAS, This commemorative event will occur during the National CPR-
AED Awareness Week which is observed annually during the first week of
June; and
WHEREAS, Tragic situations such as Dominic A. Murray's are likely to
affect thousands of youth unless sports programs implement mandatory
preventative heart screening and the awareness is increased on the seri-
ousness of sports health, education and safety; and
WHEREAS, The Dominic A. Murray 21 Memorial Foundation's mission is to
promote sports, health, education, and safety; the Foundation will be
guided by a core set of values including faith, integrity, heart,
passion and awareness; and
WHEREAS, The goal of this illustrious foundation is to help prevent
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) in young athletes, help implement preventa-
tive heart screening in educational institutions and youth-athletic
organizations and help provide training to coaches, teachers, and youth-
athletic organization volunteers in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED); and
WHEREAS, The Dominic A. Murray 21 Memorial Foundation concentrates on
ensuring that youth who participate in sports from CYO (Catholic Youth
Organization) to AAU (Amateur Athletic Union), from primary school
through college are afforded preventative heart screening and most
importantly exposed to sports, health, education and safety; and
WHEREAS, Two programs operate under the umbrella of the Dominic A.
Murray 21 Memorial Foundation, the DomHeart21 Program and the Dominic A.
Murray 21 Scholarship and Awards Program; and
WHEREAS, DomHeart21 Program is focused on implementing preventative
heart screening programs in educational institutions and youth-athletic
organizations; the program is geared to help sponsor training for coach-
es, teachers, and youth-athletic organization volunteers in CPR and use
of an AED; the Dominic A. Murray 21 Scholarship and Awards Program will
help fund education for youth in memory of Dominic; and
WHEREAS, Often described as one who always had a smile on his face,
Dominic A. Murray was a positive, respectful, and determined, young man
who possessed an unwavering love for his family, and valued every moment
he shared with both his mother and his late father; and

WHEREAS, A wonderful son, a devoted teammate, and an inspiring friend,
Dominic A. Murray will be sorely missed by all those who knew him but
his legacy will long endure the passage of time; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to pay
tribute to the life and legacy of Dominic A. Murray, dedicated student,
superb athlete, and compassionate young man; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted the family of Dominic A. Murray.
