LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Pendleton Lions Club upon the

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to organizations of high purpose and worthy accomplishment whose
endeavors have been dedicated to improving the quality of life for
others; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor
the Pendleton Lions Club upon the occasion of its 40th Anniversary, to
be celebrated on Saturday, May 16, 2009, at the Tonawanda Sportsmen's
Club in Pendleton, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Lions Club of Pendleton is renowned for its dedication to
the Pendleton community and its residents; part of the worldwide service
organization known as Lions International, with 1.3 million members in
205 countries and geographic areas dedicated to identifying and meeting
local community needs, the Pendleton Lions Club may be justly proud of
its history of support of Lions International and of local charitable
projects; and
WHEREAS, The International Association of Lions Clubs was founded by
Chicago businessman Melvin Jones in 1917; just a few years later, in
1925, Helen Keller, addressing the Lions International convention in
Ohio, urged the young service club to serve the blind and visually
impaired, challenging the Lions to become "knights of the blind in the
crusade against darkness," a challenge immediately accepted by Lions
International and to which its members have been committed and known
worldwide since that time; and
WHEREAS, Founded on February 10, 1969, the Pendleton Lions Club's
dedicated members have created an enduring legacy of service and pride
of community; the Club is well-known for its efforts on behalf of the
blind, the youth and the seniors of the community and for a wide range
of projects benefiting the entire area; and
WHEREAS, The Pendleton Lions Club builds ramps for those in need,
collects eyeglasses, hosts an annual dinner for senior citizens as well
as a fishing derby enjoyed by hundreds of area children; it also
publishes an annual address directory and distributes it at no charge to
Pendleton residents and recently built a shelter in the Town Park; and
WHEREAS, The Pendleton Lions Club and its members exemplify the Lions'
motto, "We Serve"; the dedication to community service prevalent among
all those associated with the club merits the recognition and applause
of this Legislative Body and the appreciation of all those who benefit
from its services; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Pendleton Lions Club, and its members, past and present,
upon the occasion of its 40th Anniversary; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
