LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor David A. Paterson to
proclaim July 26, 2009, as Americans with Disabilities Day in the State
of New York

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to memorialize Gover-
nor David A. Paterson to proclaim July 26, 2009, as Americans with Disa-
bilities Day in the State of New York, to recognize the importance of
society benefitting from the talents and abilities of people with disa-
bilities; and
WHEREAS, July 26, 2009, marks the 19th Anniversary of the signing of
the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Public Law #101-336, by the
101st Congress; and
WHEREAS, ADA gives civil rights and guarantees equal opportunity to
individuals with disabilities; and
WHEREAS, Over two million New Yorkers with disabilities struggle to
exist without discrimination and contribute to today's society, living
full productive lives; and
WHEREAS, The skills gained through residents' participation and inclu-
sion in educational opportunities, including the ability to analyze,
solve problems, communicate, and work cooperatively, are vital to
success in the workplace; and
WHEREAS, The majority of residents with disabilities have virtually no
opportunity to participate or contribute when events happen in places
that are not accommodating, placing them at a disadvantage in comparison
to their peers; and
WHEREAS, Equal opportunity is a basic human right; every resident of
New York State as well as of all the United States should have the
opportunity to participate and contribute; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor David A. Paterson to proclaim July 26, 2009, as
Americans with Disabilities Day in the State of New York; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable David A. Paterson, Governor of the State of New
York.
