LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor David A. Patterson to
proclaim February 2010 as Library Lovers' Month in the State of New York

WHEREAS, The state's public, school, academic, and special libraries
touch the lives of millions of New York State residents in a positive
way each year by lending library materials, answering reference ques-
tions, conducting adult and children's programs, and by providing access
to electronic information through the Internet and other sources; and
WHEREAS, The state's libraries help ensure that all the people of New
York have the broadest possible access to information resources and
materials; and
WHEREAS, The state's libraries address essential informational, educa-
tional, cultural, and recreational needs for New York residents; and
WHEREAS, The state's libraries, by providing life-long learning oppor-
tunities, make a significant contribution to the quality of life for all
New York residents; and
WHEREAS, The state's libraries, through a statewide knowledge network,
provide essential information resources for the state's economic devel-
opment; and
WHEREAS, The state's libraries, through multiple cooperative arrange-
ments, serve as models for regional and statewide cooperation; and
WHEREAS, The state's libraries, through the promotion of unrestricted
access to information, help preserve and strengthen our nation's democ-
racy; and
WHEREAS, Libraries support a competitive workforce with basic literacy
programs, computers and other resources to help children and adults
learn to find, evaluate and use information they need for their jobs,
health, education and other needs; and
WHEREAS, Most public libraries offer pre-school story hours and summer
reading programs to encourage children to begin a habit of reading; and
WHEREAS, More and more libraries are offering materials, programs, and
services that promote early childhood learning; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor David A. Paterson to proclaim February 2010 as
Library Lovers' Month in the State of New York, and to urge everyone to
support and visit libraries and to take advantage of these unique and
wonderful institutions that contribute so much to the state's well-be-
ing; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable David A. Paterson, Governor of the State of New
York.
