LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Westchester Community College upon
the occasion of its designation for special recognition by the White
Plains Library Foundation

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those institutions within our midst that have
made significant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Westchester Community College upon the occasion of its designation
for special recognition by the White Plains Library Foundation on Satur-
day, April 9, 2011; and
WHEREAS, This special event is the White Plains Library Foundation's
6th Annual Treasures Gala, entitled "Honoring Our Community Partners";
and
WHEREAS, Westchester Community College, the County's largest institu-
tion of higher education, is being honored for its outstanding work to
boost literacy and opportunity for new immigrants in the County; the
college partners with the White Plains Public Library to operate the New
Americans Resource Center, which offers free basic English conversation
and literacy classes taught by college faculty; and
WHEREAS, Westchester Community College has helped thousands of immi-
grants and non-English speakers, at its campuses in Valhalla and
throughout the County, gain essential literacy skills and make strides
towards citizenship, employment and assimilation; these services
expanded significantly through the Gateway Center, which opened on the
college's main campus in September of 2010; and
WHEREAS, Westchester Community College stands prepared to reach out in
earnest and enthusiastic quest of its mission, proudly aware of its
history and planning with vision and purpose to meet the challenges of
the future; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Westchester Community College upon the occasion of its
designation for special recognition by the White Plains Library Founda-
tion; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Joseph N. Hankin, President of Westchester Community
College.
