LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Derek Martin upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the Community Spirit Award by the Bethlehem
Chamber of Commerce

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Derek Martin has given not only of his time and energies but
also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently has
been designated for special recognition; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Derek Martin
upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the Community Spir-
it Award by the Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce; this auspicious event
will be celebrated at the 26th Annual Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce
Dinner on Friday, April 29, 2011 at the Cyprus Shrine in Glenmont, New
York; and
WHEREAS, Derek Martin has been called upon to contribute his time and
talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always given
of himself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, In his role as Executive Director of the Bethlehem YMCA,
Derek Martin has contributed significantly to both the organization and
the community at large; and
WHEREAS, Heading numerous fundraising campaigns, Derek Martin has been
able to secure considerable funds for scholarships, memberships, camps
and other YMCA programs; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable man has incorporated the Circle of Champs
program at the YMCA, which is dedicated to helping families with chil-
dren who have been affected by life threatening illness; he has also
helped to establish an outreach program along with the Albany Devils
Hockey team to help benefit The Hope House, a local residential recovery
program; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Derek Martin has also worked to secure a part-
nership between the YMCA and the Bethlehem Central School District to
create the ICAN program which helps students who are at risk either
academically or physically, or who are English as a Second Language
(ESL) learners; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Derek Martin has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Derek Martin has displayed through-
out his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Derek Martin upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
the Community Spirit Award by the Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Derek Martin.
