LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to
proclaim September 2011 as Campus Fire Safety Month in the State of New
York

WHEREAS, The State of New York takes great pride in acknowledging months
of recognition of important issues; and
WHEREAS, September has been declared Campus Fire Safety Month; and
WHEREAS, Many young adults in several states, including New York, have
tragically lost their lives in recent fires at student housing facili-
ties; and
WHEREAS, Since January of 2000, at least 143 people, including
students, parents, and children, have died in campus-related fires; and
WHEREAS, The State of New York recognizes that fire safety education
is an effective method of reducing the occurrence of fires and the
resulting loss of life; and
WHEREAS, It is vital to educate future generations about the impor-
tance of fire safety, to help ensure that they take the right precau-
tions during their college years and beyond; and
WHEREAS, By developing a generation of fire-safe adults, future loss
of life from fires will be significantly reduced; and
WHEREAS, It is recognized that automatic fire sprinkler systems are a
highly effective method of controlling or extinguishing fires in their
early stages, yet many students live in buildings that are not adequate-
ly protected with automatic fire sprinkler and alarm systems; and
WHEREAS, Many of these students do not routinely receive effective
fire safety education during their time in college; and
WHEREAS, It is vital to educate young people about the importance of
fire safety and to help ensure fire-safe behavior by young people during
their college years and beyond; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim September 2011 as
Campus Fire Safety Month in the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New
York.
