LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Regan Smith of Cato, New York,
upon the occasion of winning the Showtime Southern 500 at Darlington
Speedway

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those exemplary athletes who have excelled in professional sports,
distinguishing themselves through notable achievements and representing
humanity to the fullest; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late Regan Smith of Cato, New York, upon the occasion of winning the
Showtime Southern 500 at Darlington Speedway; and
WHEREAS, Regan Smith joined Furniture Row in 2009 after being desig-
nated the 2008 Rookie of the Year with Dale Earnhardt, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, At age 27, Regan Smith added his name to the star-studded
record book of winners of the prestigious Southern 500 at historic
Darlington Raceway; he took the lead with 10 laps remaining in the race;
and
WHEREAS, Regan Smith, the driver of the No. 78 Furniture Row Chevro-
let, powered away from the field on not one, but two restarts, to claim
his first career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory; and
WHEREAS, On Darlington's 1.366-mile oval, Regan Smith, inherited the
lead by not pitting on a late caution and then led the final 11 laps
while fending off a furious charge by noted driver Carl Edwards; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor Regan Smith
for his extraordinary athletic accomplishments which are a tribute to
his skill, dedication and commitment; his character and achievements
stand as a sterling example and inspiration to all who would aspire to
success; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Regan Smith of Cato, New York, upon the occasion of winning
the Showtime Southern 500 at Darlington Speedway; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Regan Smith.
